Beauty in the Breakdown

Chapter 8 – “It’s Hard to Believe”


           “We’re almost there!” Sonic of this world said as we tracked to the windy mountain. He’s been pulling my arm all the way here that I could feel a pain shooting up my arm. We ran passed so many things that I didn’t get a good look at everything. Soon we were running through a rocky pass. I wasn’t enjoying this trip to the unknown.
           As we finally make it to the top, there was dry lake with a dead waterfall surrounded by dead leaves and grass. Sonic pull me to his side and said, “Look at the moon, my Ames.” I looked up to see a perfectly rounded crimson harvest moon. I do have to admit it was pretty creepy to stare at, like the other things I have seen that make up this world. The sun raised up to meet the moon, in defiance of death. I looked down from it remembering life the sun gave to my world, and felt sad for this version of Mobius, Sonic gently raised my face to meet his gaze. “It’s alright, it’s not going to kill you to look,” He said.
           I looked back up at the crimson eclipse. As the celestrial globes now being one, started to change into the sun I knew back home. Now the once dead realm, started to fill with life once again round us. It’s like the darkness was dispersing. Even the once dead waterfall started to flow again. It reminded me of home, I wonder if anyone knows I’m gone. I looked back at Sonic and realize he was different, his eyes where green with white round them, his fur was lighter than before, and his teeth were perfect. He was watching me the whole time and giving me that cocky smile I like a lot. I almost wanted to cry with joy.
           “Do you like it?” He asked. I nod with a smile across my face. Soon the dream ended as the moon moved away from the sun and the whole world fall back into darkness and death. Even Sonic changed back into this world’s darker version.
           “What just happen?” I asked, unsure of what I saw. Sonic chuckled with a deep darkness in his voice.
           “A small window of the past, it happens about every four month,” He said as he walked passed me to the edge of the Mountain.
           “Really? Why on Mobius would it do that for?” He looked back at me then turn his whole body round and gave me a wicked smile.
           “A reminder. The Fates are showing us what we were before, The Event.” Fates again? Cream of this world made it sound like they were nice and full of life, not hateful. Then again, I don’t know much about this world besides the people I met so far.
           “I thought the Fates were kind to their people?” I said waiting for a reply. Sonic nod his head.
           “They’re only kind to the ones that listen, never to those who goes against their will,” Sonic said. Somehow I had a feeling Sonic was one of those who would never listen to them.
           “Oh…” I looked down in shame as I tried thinking about what Cream said. I wonder maybe everyone here hated Sonic for who or what they turned him into or maybe for another reason. I really need to know more. As I turned to look back at Sonic, I didn’t realize how close he was to me. His crimson eyes staring down at me.
           I wanted to move away but Cream’s words popped in my head, “It will only get worse.” I signed and looked back at him as I tried not to look so scared of him. He smiled at my reaction of him.
           “Cream talks a little too much about the Fates,” Sonic said as he turned his head to the side. I nod to hide my fear. Sonic looked down into my eyes to question me, “Did she say anything more to you?”
           “Yes that this whole world runs on magic,” I replied. Sonic nod his head in agreement.
           “Yes it does,” he said.
           “Do you know magic?” I asked.
           “Everything round you is filled with magic. This land, the people you have met, and even your necklace.” His words stung me as I lifted up the necklace round my neck. How would he know about this necklace? My Sonic gave this to me for my birthday. Then it hit me, at the ball my Sonic didn’t know what I was talking about. My Sonic from my world never did show up at the hospital. All this time, it was this Sonic from another whole universe. I feel like I was played as a fool but why on Mobius would he go through all the trouble bring me here?
           “Sonic from my world didn’t give me this necklace,” I said in deep sadness. Sonic with those crimson eyes still staring down at me, placed his hand on my hand as he tried to stop me from removing with the necklace.
           “I did,” he said calmly.
           “Why?”
           “Because the only way of keeping you safe from this land is by that necklace which of now is holding a spell that allows to exist in this realm. Cream and I created the necklace with a spell so you won’t die from the toxins of this realm.” I let go of the necklace and stared up at him with anger.
           “You didn’t have to do that,” I said hatefully.
           “I had too,” Sonic moved his index finger round the heart shape necklace lovingly, “Be warn my dear Ames, if that necklace ever brakes. The spell on it will disappear and you might become part of this world or die,” he said with care in his voice.
           I really don’t know how I feel as of right now, I’m hurt Sonic from my world did coming to see me and the reason why I’m wearing this necklace is to save me from this world so I couldn’t die. I guess I should be thanking this Sonic but he is the whole reason why I’m here. I might as well go on with it. I looked at him realizing his gaze was still on the necklace. He looked at me like a little boy wanting a toy which didn’t belong to him. I laughed which caught him off guard.
           “Is this the surprise you wanted to show me?” I said as he jerked his index finger back from my necklace and started to laugh too. I am glad he found this funny too. I said to myself.
           “No,” he said ending his laugher.
           “Then what’s the surprise?” I asked curiously wondering what it might be.
           “I’m going to teach you to fly.” I was shocked at him and thinking his crazy. He believes I could fly. I feared what might happen next when he realize I can’t fly. Only Sonic of this world could fly. I’m pretty sure I can guess what this one could do. I hope he was just joking.
           “How are we going to flying?” I asked.
           “Don’t you remember what I said, this whole world runs on magic. We can fly anytime we want to, see I’ll show you!” He said as he grab me and lift me up into his arms. I didn’t understand at first until he picked me up and took me right to the edge of the mountain. It looked about 90 feet down. I held Sonic close as he start to laugh. “See it doesn’t look that bad.” Doesn’t look bad I thought, I don’t think we are looking at the same thing.
           Soon he threw me over the mountain ledge and let me fall down. I screamed feeling no air making words from my throat. Why would he do this to me? To my surprise the descent came to hard stop and never hit the ground. I stopped screaming as my senses returned, what was happening. I was hovering over the ground. How am I doing this? I asked myself. Soon I realized Sonic came to my side and laughed at me. I was annoyed by his laugh.
           “What’s so funny? You could have killed me.”
           “Do you really believe I would let you die, you mean too much to me, I would never let anything hurt you. Besides I’m here to catch you.” He said. So he lifted us into the sky. I don’t know why but I found this cool.
           I starting to enjoy this a lot. Even under the red moon light was pretty fun. I remember seeing Sonic flying was when he became Super Sonic.
           Sonic of this world was watching me the whole time, I guess he was waiting for a reaction from me. “I’m speechless,” I said looking at him in amazement, “I thought you had to be Super Sonic to fly.” He chuckled as he spin me round in a circle.
           “Well you see Ames, I don’t need to be Super Sonic to fly,” Sonic said “Why don’t I let you enjoy the view a bit?” as this Sonic glided in the wind.
           “Ok,” I replied back to him as we moved higher. I love how pretty it gets when flying higher. You know, I could use to this a lot. It wasn’t very long until I realize my necklace was glowing bright yellow.
           As we came to a stop to look at the necklace, a voice starting to whisper in my head. It sounded like me but older, am I having second thought about this? That’s until a face appeared right front of my face with piercing crimson eyes. I couldn’t tell who it, I thought it was Sonic from this world until the same female voice from last night was yelling at me this time, “I WARNED YOU TO LEAVE!!!” It scared me.
           Next thing I knew, I was falling down to the ground. I could feel the wind ripping at my body, I covered my eyes with my hand. This was too much for me. That’s when Sonic of this world saved me once again from falling. He grabbed me before I hit the ground. Sonic held me close as I wrapped my arms round him in fear, then I starting to cry. He didn’t know how to react.
           “What happen? What’s wrong?!?” Sonic asked showing fear at what happened. I tried wiping the tears away but it kept on coming down my face.
           “I saw something. She told me to leave, I think it’s the same voice from earlier when I enter this world through the ring last night.” Sonic looked at me in disbelief then look down in shame.
           “I guess I really do have to give you that test,” he said.
           “What test?”
           “A long time ago, I told your parents in angry, I would give you a test. If you passed, you can go back home with your parents. If you failed, you stay here with me. I was hoping we didn’t have to do the test but after what just happen… I think you need to take it.”
           “So you’re going to give me this test.”
           “I was hoping the Fates had forgotten, but I must give you a test.”
           “Where do I take it?” I asked.
           “I have chosen Tails to give you the test.” He said as he picked me up and we flew back to the castle. I don’t think Sonic was happy about this idea, but if it means me going back home. I’m gladly will accept this test. I pray I don’t mess up.
